Ages 18 – 25, Days: 18
This experience is designed specifically for high school graduates as they navigate the transition into adult life. This unique program provides instruction in organization, goal setting, independence, life skills and social skills. This course takes advantage of various regions in the Southeast, and includes adventures in the Blue Ridge Mountains as well as the low country. This course is designed to promote the development of time and money management, interpersonal communication, activity planning, and group participation. Participants are provided guidance by staff, but are also empowered to live as young adults, making decisions and developing independence.
The journey begins at Balsam Base, where campers will participate in a variety of activities to promote team building and develop a sense of community. This includes participation in our thrilling High Ropes course, where campers will test their limits as they traverse from element to element high in the trees! Successful completion of this course is sure to provide campers a sense of accomplishment and pride in their abilities. The group will participate in service learning projects, such as working on a local Habitat for Humanity house, and will experience the joy and value of giving back to their community.
Next, campers will explore the nearby forests and waterfalls as they venture into the backcountry of Pisgah National forest, before preparing for their expedition to the Charleston, SC! This beach adventure provides campers with abundant activity options: parasailing, sea kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, and much more. Groups will explore this historic area, including options such as visiting Fort Sumpter, downtown Charleston walking tours, and others. With the main goal to develop more independence, only some activities will be pre-planned. Participants will work together to fill their schedule with activities they will enjoy!
Campers return to Balsam for a whitewater rafting adventure on both the Nantahala and Ocoee rivers. This rafting progression will teach groups the value of communication and teamwork as they paddle on some of the best whitewater in the East! The course culminates in participation in the Navitat Canopy Adventures, a tree-based zipline immersed in the incredible Blue Ridge Mountains. This unforgettable experience is a wonderful way to wrap up such an amazing adventure!
Unlike our other SOAR camps, our Postgraduate campers will have access to their cell phones during the course. We will use this as an opportunity to teach responsibility and encourage independence.
