NC Whitewater Intensive
Ages 14 to 18, 10 Days
This rewarding course is designed for students who want to develop their whitewater skills while rafting and kayaking some of the best whitewater rivers in the East. Campers will focus on paddling skills, communication, and whitewater safety as they learn the fundamentals of navigating through thrilling rapids.
The program begins with team building and expedition planning at Balsam Base, before the group heads off to the Tuckaseegee River for an introduction to whitewater morphology and safety. Campers will experience being in control as they navigate their way by funyak (an inflatable kayak) down this mild, yet exciting whitewater section of the river. After learning the basics, campers will then test their new found skills as they funyak the Nantahala River, which is slightly more challenging and even more rewarding!
The group then begins a 4-day whitewater kayak instruction course. Campers will learn various kayaking skills such as the Eskimo Roll, how to read rapids, ferrying, eddy turns and peel outs. The qualified instructors use progressive techniques to help campers develop confidence and to ensure camper safety, while mastering a new, lifelong skill!
The team will also raft down the exciting Ocoee River- site of the 1996 Olympic whitewater course. This Class 3 and 4 river provides the group one last opportunity to work as a team while demonstrating their new-found whitewater skills.
This exciting course is a one-of-a-kind experience, not to be forgotten!
