NC Horseback Riding
Ages 11 – 18
Campers will spend this course developing communication, social skills, and increasing their self-esteem through participating in thrilling adventure activities. The 12-day adventure begins with participation in our exciting High Ropes course at Balsam Base. Each camper’s bravery will be rewarded, as they navigate among the various elements set high in the trees.
The feature of this course, horseback riding, takes riders deep into the mountains, with their wildflowers, sunsets, and scenic vistas of the Blue Ridge. Campers will first bond with their horse as they learn grooming and equestrian skills, before they depart on their day ride adventures. Learning to trust, care for, and manage horses can promote confidence, communication, and even social skills. Nightly meetings under the stars will provide campers an opportunity to discuss and reflect on their growth and successes of each day.
They journey continues as campers depart for Pisgah National Forest. Here will be their home for the next few days as campers test their strength and develop problem solving skills while participating in rock climbing adventures. They will also explore the area’s incredible waterfalls and its surrounding beauty. The group will demonstrate their ability to communicate and work as a team as they raft the exciting whitewater rapids of the Nantahala River. The journey comes to an exciting conclusion with an end of course celebration at our Balsam Base. The group meeting will allow the team to revisit their incredible adventures and discuss their new found skills, confidence and friendships.
My Camp Experience
"The entire process was a wonderful experience for Nathan and for us as a family. The staff was very supportive, especially regarding Nathan's multiple food allergies. They really went out of there way to find and provide foods that he enjoys. I have NEVER heard Nathan talk about any activity as much-and in as much detail-as he has about SOAR. For someone who is a "man of few words," that speaks volumes about your program."
