California Expedition

Ages 11 to 18, 15 Days

Cost: $4,100

California Rock ClimbingA whole world of adventure awaits those campers joining us for the California Expedition course! The journey starts in San Francisco, where campers will join each other before heading up to Sunset Beach campground for teambuilding and fun. The teams will explore the Monterey Bay Aquarium and participate in a sea kayaking adventure. Next it’s off to discover the wonders of Yosemite National Park. Here campers will find themselves surrounded by giant sequoias, magnificent waterfalls, and deep valleys surrounded by towering granite cliffs. Bouldering (a form of rock climbing) will allow campers to test their strength and develop communication & problem solving skills.

Redwoods California

After they depart Yosemite, campers will travel to South Tahoe to begin preparation for their exploration into the backcountry. The team will learn about expedition planning, including the importance of organization, as they pack and determine their backpacking route. Hiking days will be rewarded with the exhilaration that comes from being self-reliant and pushing past perceived limits. This trip will set the stage for the rock climbing portion of the trip – as campers again work on goal setting and problem solving skills.

Group on Top of Mountain

The course concludes with a whitewater rafting trip down the American River. The team will work together to navigate the rapids of this scenic river. The final night is spent celebrating the hard work and achievements of each camper before headed back to San Francisco for their departure.

My Camp Experience

“My son received a level of love, care, growth and encouragement from his counselors – and a sense of comradeship with his cabin mates unparalleled to any other camps/teams/classes of which he has been a part. He is still maintaining (most) aspects of behavioral maturity he developed while at camp. He is better with his communication and has more self-confidence. At SOAR he was surrounded by others with those struggles/feelings similar to his own. He was able to have great adventures and positively work on himself, encourage and be encouraged by others, and develop skills that will strengthen him for a life time. And for these young ones, the whole world is before them!”
