At 15-days our NC Expedition is designed to be slightly more physically challenging and offers a broader range of adventures than some of our other course options. The NC Expedition crew’s biggest adventure – a 5-day backpacking trip in Pisgah National Forest, through which they learn the fundamentals of expedition planning: using a map & compass, planning their backpacking route, and organizing and packing just the essentials! Hiking days will be rewarded with exhilarating views and the satisfaction of navigating “the road less traveled.” Along with traditional activities you see in other courses this group also gets to go mountain biking, rappelling, and caving! They also spend more time on the water where they Funyak the Tuckasegee, then whitewater raft down the 2-3 class Nantahala River, and also whitewater raft on the Ocoee River, site of the 1996 Olympic Whitewater competitions and home to prime Class 3-4 water.
Up, up & away! We’ve got the need for speed!
“This will be my son’s 5th year attending SOAR. It’s the highlight of his summer. He thrives when on course and it crosses over when he comes home. Over the years we have seen his self-confidence and willingness to attempt new things blossom. He has become more aware of social skills and has been given ample opportunities to build leadership skills. His counselors treated him exceptionally well and seemed in tune to his specific needs. I would highly recommend SOAR for children who love the outdoors and learns best by celebrating successes. Are kids going to have to push themselves, work hard and step outside of their comfort zone? Yes. Are they better for doing so? Absolutely!”
