At 18 days, NC Academic Discovery combines a multitude of outdoor adventure activities and academic / study skill instruction. The differentiating aspect of Academic Discovery is the classroom experience, which is designed to help prevent summer “learning loss” (in either Language Arts or Math) while providing instruction in study skills and organizational strategies. Interspersed throughout the course are about 8 days in classroom instruction (3 hours each day) and two field trips (one to the Qualla Boundary of the Cherokee Nation and another to the Appalachian Highlands Science Learning Center) . The remainder of those days is spent doing fun adventure activities, including high ropes, team building initiatives, archery & hatchet throwing, primitive skills and others. On weekends, the teams head to the field for a variety of exciting expeditions including backpacking, rock climbing, caving, a day at Fontana Lake, and whitewater rafting.

“For kids with low self-esteem and ADHD challenges, SOAR programs give them confidence in themselves and their abilities. Working with others is critical for success in life and SOAR provides the opportunity to learn how to compromise and communicate effectively through their team approach. The staff is incredibly caring and experienced. I can’t say enough good things about what SOAR has done for my son and by extension, our family.”
