This SOAR Post Graduate course is specifically designed for high school graduates as they transition into adult life. It is a comprehensive program that provides valuable instruction in organization, goal setting, independence, life skills, and social skills. The course aims to equip participants with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in various aspects of their adult lives.
The NC Post Grad program starts at Balsam Base camp where participants plan their first trip to the Pisgah Ranger District. They plan meals, programs, budgets, and logistics for activities like backpacking, rock climbing, and trail maintenance.
After the first trip, Post Grad participants plan and prepare for a 5-day excursion to Charleston, SC. They develop organizational, planning, and social skills through activities like visiting landmarks, sea kayaking, touring museums, and spending time on the beach.
One of the unique aspects of this course is its utilization of various regions in the Southeast. Participants have the opportunity to design, plan, and execute their own adventures in both the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains and the captivating South Carolina low country. This hands-on approach allows participants to take ownership of their experiences and develop essential life skills such as time and money management, interpersonal communication, activity planning, and group participation. While participants receive guidance from experienced staff, they are also encouraged to make decisions, exercise independence, and take responsibility for their actions. This empowerment fosters personal growth and prepares participants for the challenges and responsibilities they will face as young adults.
