Summer Staff Program Locations:
SOAR offers several locations for our staff. We provide summer camp courses in North Carolina, Florida, Wyoming, and California. Staff will be hired for a specific location but may be relocated based on need by SOAR.
Balsam Base, Balsam, NC
Our Balsam Base is located in Balsam, NC, approximately 45 minutes west of Asheville. We are situated on ~25 acres of wooded, mountainous land, but most programming occurs in the nearby Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests. For the limited time that teams are on base, staff and students sleep in rustic cabins. Those cabins have no electricity, but there is a centrally located bathhouse that has bathrooms and showers.
The summer temperatures are typically in the upper 70’s to mid 80’s during the day and upper 50’s to mid 60’s at night. This area of the country is also considered a temperate rain forest, so come prepared to work rain or shine!
Eagle View Ranch, Dubois, WY
Eagle View Ranch is located 4 miles west
of Dubois WY, situated on ~22 acres of ranch and woodland. For their time on base, students and staff stay in outfitter-style shelters and teepees that are electricity-free.
The weather during staff training has a tendency to be cold and wet with a couple of days with snow. Be prepared with plenty of warm clothing, weatherproof layers, and warm footwear. The entire training is conducted outside in rain, snow, and sunshine.
The camp temperatures from June through August typically range from the 30’s at night to the 80’s during the day.
Florida Keys, FL
Our Florida Keys Adventure and Florida SCUBA programs are facilitated in the Middle Keys. The campsite is located by the Spanish Harbor Channel on West Summerland Key and overlooks both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. All staff and students stay in tents throughout the summer and will have access to bathroom facilities.
Be prepared for lots of sun and heat! Temperatures range from the mid 90’s during the day to the mid 70’s at night.
Our California programs are conducted in both Northern and Southern California. All staff and students stay in tents throughout the summer and will have access to bathroom facilities.
There is a marine layer that typically burns off by noon…but may hide the California sunshine all day long. In Southern CA, the temperatures range from the mid 70’s to low 80’s during the day and fall to the mid 50’s at night. In Northern CA, the temperature range tends to range from the mid 60’s to upper 80’s during the day with upper 40’s to low 60’s at night.
All staff will participate in a two week training in North Carolina or Wyoming before heading to their summer location. This will include learning about:
- Team Building
- Group Processing Techniques
- Behavior Management with ADHD/LD population
- Medication Administration
- Program Adventure Activity Skills
- Policies and Procedures of SOAR
